The “mother of all musicals” takes the stage at CTM
Now playing through April 28th at Classic Theatre of Maryland is the beloved Broadway classic from 1959, Gypsy–featuring the music of Jule Styne, the lyrics of Stephen Sondheim, a book by Arthur Laurents, and more familiar standards of the repertoire than you can fit on your workout playlist.
Under the direction of CTM Producing Artistic Director Sally Boyett, Gypsy features a mix of company veterans and assorted newcomers tackling a piece that celebrates the daily grind and stargazing aspirations of performers everywhere; never flinches in probing the tough mother-daughter dynamics that drive the drama; blasts off the roof with rousing numbers and breaks your heart with plaintive ballads; and somehow manages to make audiences’ eyes water with both hilarity and heartbreak.
And to get there, Boyett brags that the production has also found a way to work in a four-legged tap-dancing cow and dares to risk upstaging the cast with not only a child, not only a dog–but multiple children and three dogs!
