Go into the woods with Shakespeare at Everyman
Everyman Theatre is making a rare foray into the Shakespearean canon with its current production of the much-loved comic romance, A Midsummer Night’s Dream–playing through June 9th.
This fresh, surprising new take* on the old classic looks to find new resonance, new twists, new laughs, new life, new bite, and a balance between heart and hilarity–all while celebrating the transformative power of the company’s resident ensemble, in often-unexpected ways.
At the center of the action–amid frolicking fairies and rollicking handicrafters and all the magical mayhem of a night in the woods–a quartet of passionate, if quarrelsome, middle-aged lovers find themselves transported back to younger versions of themselves. In a celebration of love, forgiveness, the enduring folly of mortals and the power of imagination, the play transports its company of players along with us as onlookers into a realm of spirits and dreams and back again.
The production’s director, Noah Himmelstein, joined me to reflect on these elements and the journey of discovery (and guffaws) they’ve been on preparing the production for performance.
