Florence Foster Jenkins: A Diva Gets Her Due

By Dyana Neal | Posted in Host Blogs | Comments Off on Florence Foster Jenkins: A Diva Gets Her Due

I was about 20 the first time I heard a recording of Florence Foster Jenkins. A friend put it on at a dinner party where all of the attendees were singers, and everyone, myself included, laughed uproariously at Mrs. Jenkins’ intonation, pronunciation, and diction. Many derisive comments were made about her having merely been a […]

Get on your bikes and ride!

By Dyana Neal | Posted in Host Blogs, Interviews | Comments Off on Get on your bikes and ride!

From July 22-24, scooter enthusiasts will meet at various locations in Baltimore to check out one another’s bikes, listen to music, meet like-minded folks, and oh, yes, ride! There hasn’t been a scooter rally in Charm City for a few years, so fans of two-wheeled transit (myself included) have good reason to be excited about […]

In Stitches

Two years ago, I got into historical reenacting and docent work. I owned a lot of vintage clothing at the time – still do – but nothing remotely appropriate for Georgian or Regency events. I found a couple of gowns that will just barely pass muster for the latter period (they have zippers! Quel dommage!) […]

A Modern Novelist Goes to the Opera

By Dyana Neal | Posted in Host Blogs | Comments Off on A Modern Novelist Goes to the Opera

I’m always on the lookout for interesting reading material, so when I recently read a New Yorker review of Alexander Chee’s The Queen of the Night, my eyes got a bit wider. A novel that combines several of my passions – opera, history, jewelry, and fashion – sounded like exactly what I’d been seeking. Not many […]

To Market, To Market – Georgian Style

By Dyana Neal | Posted in Host Blogs | 1 Comment

Last weekend, I joined some friends at the annual Mount Vernon Colonial Market and Fair. I’ve been having a great time attending historical reenactments, so pretty much any excuse to don my 18th century gown and pocket hoops will get me out of the house in a jiffy. So, what might one find at an […]

A Truly “Novel” Piece of Musical Theater

By Dyana Neal | Posted in Host Blogs, Interviews | Comments Off on A Truly “Novel” Piece of Musical Theater

Baltimore’s Spotlighters Theatre is presenting  A Sensation Novel from September 11-October 4. With a book by W.S. Gilbert and music by Michael Nash and T. German Reed, the show mocks both literary and theatrical conventions, and may also shatter some stereotypes about the “prim and proper” Victorians. Recently, I spoke with director Michael Blum and […]

Ordinary Stories, Extraordinary Beauty

By Dyana Neal | Posted in Host Blogs | Comments Off on Ordinary Stories, Extraordinary Beauty

Cohesion Theatre Company and The Strand Theatre Company have joined forces to present the Baltimore premiere of The Pillow Book by Anna Moench. The play runs through July 12 at The Church on the Square in Canton. Recently, I chatted with director Jonas David Grey about his production of this challenging, non-linear, haunting piece.   […]

Have gown, will (time) travel

By Dyana Neal | Posted in Host Blogs | 1 Comment

So, this is how I dress on weekends. Okay, not usually. This past weekend, however, I had a chance to play at being a well-to-do 18th century lady. I joined some friends at the first-ever Shore Party held on the grounds of Historic London Town and Gardens. The event featured four recreated 18th century boats […]

A man and his mandolin. Actually, a whole bunch of mandolins.

By Dyana Neal | Posted in Host Blogs, Interviews | Comments Off on A man and his mandolin. Actually, a whole bunch of mandolins.

This Sunday at 4PM, the Baltimore Mandolin Orchestra and Baltimore Mandolin Quartet will pay tribute to Baltimore musician and composer Jonathan Jensen by presenting a concert of his original works and arrangements. Jonathan visited me recently to talk about the program and the history of mandolin ensembles.

If you wish to sockdologize, please absquatulate!

150 years ago this week – on April 14, 1865, to be exact – President Abraham Lincoln was watching Tom Taylor’s comedy Our American Cousin at Ford’s Theater in Washington, D.C. When Joseph Jefferson, the actor playing Asa Trenchard, uttered his famous laugh line “Don’t know the manners of good society, eh? Well, I guess I […]
