By Dyana Neal | Posted in Host Blogs, Interviews, WBJC Programs | Comments Off on Revisiting “The Secret Garden”

This weekend, Broadway in Annapolis will revisit  “The Secret Garden”, Marsha Norman’s musical based on the 1911 novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Last week, I spoke with Music Director Ernie Green about the production, which features both opera singers and “legit” Broadway vocalists, including some longtime audience favorites.

Opera Goes to the Theater

By Dyana Neal | Posted in Host Blogs, Interviews, WBJC Programs | Comments Off on Opera Goes to the Theater

These days, it’s not at all uncommon for symphony orchestras or even opera companies to present musical theater works. However, the reverse – doing an opera – is a daring move for a theater company! Earlier this week, I spoke with Music Director Ben Shaver about Stillpointe Theatre’s current production of Leonard Bernstein’s “Trouble in […]

The Baltimore Choral Arts Society will present their annual holiday concert, “Christmas With Choral Arts”, on Tuesday, December 5th at the Basilica of the Assumption in Baltimore. As always, the program features a wide variety of seasonal music, but this year, there are some new twists. I recently spoke with Baltimore Choral Arts’ new Music […]

During World War II, 2,710 Liberty Ships were built in the United States. Today, just two of them remain afloat and fully operational. On September 9, the 75th anniversary of the Baltimore-built S.S. John W. Brown‘s launch will be celebrated with a Living History Cruise. I recently had the pleasure of chatting with Seaman Paul […]

If music be the food of love, what’s the food of music?

By Dyana Neal | Posted in Host Blogs | 3 Comments

On almost any given day, if you were to stop by WBJC’s studios, you’d hear someone mention food. The staff at this radio station loves to natter on about all things culinary – favorite cookbooks, silly food trends, amazing (or dreadful) restaurants we’ve recently tried – if you can eat it or drink it, we’ve […]

The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and Concert Artists of Baltimore Symphonic Chorale are presenting their annual performances of Handel’s Messiah December 2-4, with concerts at both the Meyerhoff and Strathmore. Maestro Edward Polochick has conducted Messiah with the BSO since 1982, and I’ve had the privilege and pleasure of singing it with him many times since […]

Opera Goes to the Movies, 1935-Style

By Dyana Neal | Posted in Host Blogs, Movie Reviews | 4 Comments

It’s less and less common to see classical music represented in popular culture these days, especially in a positive sense, so imagine my delight when I recently saw that Turner Classic Movies was airing Love Me Forever, a 1935 film starring Metropolitan Opera soprano Grace Moore. I’m rather ashamed to admit I didn’t know Moore’s […]

This month, Baltimore Shakespeare Factory is presenting the Baltimore premiere of “The Shoemaker’s Holiday” by Thomas Dekker. Based on the story of Simon Eyre, a commoner who rose to the office of Lord Mayor of London, it’s a  “London City Comedy” set in the world of ordinary citizens.
