THE CHINESE LADY visits Everyman Theatre
From October 22nd though November 19th, Baltimore’s resident Everyman Theatre is producing Lloyd Suh’s critically acclaimed 2018 play, The Chinese Lady. The historical drama, which tells the seemingly fantastical tale of Afong Moy–thought to have been the first Chinese woman in America when she arrived, at age 14, in 1834–across some 70 years of her life and the life of the nation. Moy became and remained for many years a wildly popular public curiosity, and the play explores both this external history and the more complex, nuanced internal experience of her private self.
Joining me to talk about the play’s impact and exploration, and the implications of this cross-cultural encounter, was the production’s director, Nana Dakin. You can hear our conversation here, if you miss it on the air, and get tickets and more information at www.everymantheatre.org.
