Switching it up with CODE SWITCH at Sisters Freehold
To switch, or not to switch? This is the question posed by playwright (and director) Shakill Jamal in his brand new play, The Code Switch, debuting with Baltimore’s intrepid Sisters Freehold theater company from July 15-30.
Specifically, the play probes the question of codeswitching, whether out of necessity in navigating the fraught dynamics of a racially and identity-charged society or out of any range of other needs or choices. And with that, it considers what, and when, we are truly our most “authentic” selves, whether such a thing exists, and whether there is only one version.
Wouldn’t it be great not have to switch? Or would it? What about when you need to? Want to? Do we all get the same choice? Which is the real “us” in the end, or are they all part of the same whole?
All this with six dynamic actors on stage in a choose-your-own-adventure style exploration that blends profound questions with vibrant and vital theatricality.
As directed by Jamal, with associate director Kateri and creative consultant Raven Lorraine, The Code Switch runs Thursdays-Saturdays @ 8pm, Sundays @ 2pm at Baltimore Theatre Project, 45 W Preston Street in Baltimore. Tickets are priced on a sliding scale.
