12-09-13 Word On Wine Review Montefalco Sagrantino!

This week Mary and I are still in virtual Umbria as we review two wines using the indigenous grape Sagrantino.  As Mary points out in the show Sagrantino was used for sacred and sweet wines and for a while disappeared from vineyards in favor of other grapes.  Thankfully since the 90’s it has made a strong come back as a quality table wine from Umbria.  We reviewed two of them and enjoyed both.

1)2007 Tenuta Castelbuono Montefalco Sagrantino.  $37.  Rich deep  red color and  full bodied.  A nice example of a fine varietal.  Lovely nose and very grippy tannins.  Mary though it could use a bit more structure but still thought it was lovely…I just loved it!  Would have been great with Dinner from Frank’s Pizza  and Pasta on Bel Air Rd.

2)2007 Arnaldo Caprai Sagrantino di Montefalco “Collepiano”.  $50.  OK it’s a bit of cash…Maybe a lot…this had many months in oak and was very intense.  I think letting this sit for a few years would be fabulous.   I though this was a wild ride with a lot of complexity…Mary felt it was a bit unbalanced but would mellow in time.  Either way we were both impressed.  Both of these wines are available locally, ask your wine store to order them if they aren’t on the shelves.

Check out our show.
