A Musical Touchdown!
It’s almost Super Bowl time again! Alas, the Baltimore Ravens aren’t headed to the big game this year. That said, classical music fans on the east coast and all over the country have reason to rejoice. For the first time ever at the Super Bowl, our country’s National Anthem will be sung by an opera singer. Acclaimed soprano Renee Fleming has been chosen to do the honors.

I’m not a football fan, but I do love opera, and every time I see it portrayed in a positive light in mainstream popular culture, I feel the urge to shout (or perhaps sing) hooray! Here’s hoping that Ms. Fleming’s performance gets glowing notices and inspires a few people to check out a new kind of music.
Perhaps next year, the folks who hire the Super Bowl’s National Anthem singer will choose a mezzo…?
